Quick (Very) First Impressions

Due to the efforts of many, recently, there is only one version of the firmware out there for the SC5000 and that’s the same firmware that Tiësto, Laid back Luke, Oliver Heldens, Paul Oakenfold etc etc and many other guys around the world are using night-in-night-out.

Whatever stops/starts you were getting would, in my mind, have been down to the memory stick itself or files etc

I have seen a few bugs with linking the decks when my friends try and plug in. It’s a 1.0 release, so some bugs are to be expected. IMO. From what I have seen, the bigger the library, the more issues.

Got mine yesterday as well, superstoked about them well worth the wait !!! Did not have the time to dive deep into the manual het but i have a question that i could not find the answer to How do you UNLOAD a track from the sc5000 ? Say for instance i have 2 tracks loaded on my deck and want to unload 1 , how do i do this , because a mistake i easily made to stop or whatever the wrong track .

Just stop the deck that you’ve loaded the wrong track onto and load a new track onto it.

When i put a large librairy (< 20 000 tracks) on my SSD , crates where mixed. Some pieces are not in their place. i find tracks from a crate in another crate when the SSD is plugged on the sc5000

Files on external devices will appear in bothbtheir external location and in the main library also.

i think We do not understand each other Sorry i’m french … lol

I analyse a large library with engine and i export it to my ssd. then when i plug my ssd on the sc5000

Some playlist are mixed, i found techno track in dancehall crate , transition tracks in hiphop crate … While in “engine” everything is in the right place.

The ploblem iccur when i export a large library. If i export just few crate there is no problem. If i export my whole library = problem

No that is not what i want to do I want to UNLOAD the second track and NOT load another so the view on the screen is only one small waveform

Today, I went to a store nearby to try the SC5000s.

I liked the build quality a lot. The jog is pure porn, the housing feels great, all buttons are very responsive and fun to play with. I had a drive analyzed in Engine Prime plugged in which worked ok (track analysis still needs some work!) I also had a CDJ-2000NX2 right next to it. The difference is huge. Everything on the Pioneer feels worse and a lot cheaper.

Biggest surprise was the X1800 they also had on demo. The EQ settings are super cool, the filter sounds really good and it’s a great match to the SC5000s. If only it had a rotary fader option…

After all the tension building over the last months, I was a little worried the actual units might be a let down. They are not.

GOOD JOB, Denon.

the drive and tracks I used where ones I use vey weekend and high quality drive, Just because it doesn’t happen to them doesn’t mean there are no more bugs in the decks, I was banging through menu options and keyboard search and going tapping through the artist, title and other windows along the top when it happened, I don’t think tieso is doing that during a show, they hit next track, next track, next track, next track, and then go home, LOL

The decks are awesome though, I really liked them, ill give it a few months to a year before I consider buying though, engine needs a bit of work but thats whats to be expected on a version 1.0. Better then what Pioneer did when they released the NXS and i couldn’t use it for 6 months cause they would lock up when u hit hot cues, lol

Good work Denon, step in the right direction for sure!

I also would like to tell the sc5000 what bpm a track should be if analyzed wrong. Ed sheerans shape of you kept coming up as 120bpm with every analyse value, now I manually set it, bit how can I secure such gridding might I accidentantly reset it or while reanalyzing a folder or playlist a manually set bpm track would be in?

First impressions after two 4+ hour shows this weekend. And both on only one deck, due to a really small dj booth. I had traktor set up for back up but havent touched it. So that’s truly also a game changer. But I did notice some issues or didn’t find the setting to my liking yet… The way sync works on one deck confusing to me.

The master light keeps burning on both layers but only in one screen it got the 1 mark in the sync circle.

So since I was mixing in one deck, during de next track on the other layer, my platter handling affected the track playing for the people, so the rest of the night I did it all the old school way, no sync no quantize. But what a joy to mix that way again and that on one player! Sync master behavior on two decks is just as one would expect so no issues there.

Overall impression on the build and features: Beyond expectations! Units feel solid and look super nice! I packed then in universal odyssey flightcases and they fit quite nice!

Workflow is logical and feels solid and well thought thru. I think some things need time for me to get used to and some others could be adjustable in coming updates but as others said, well worth the wait denon!

And as I tried to pack my usb sticks, I understand while we got postponed couple of times cause packing crates takes ages! I skipped the whole sticktrain till this weekend, jumping from uncued cdj800’s on the traktor train, so I never had the joy to appreciate how long packing crates on a 256gb stick would take.

And no rekordbuddy for Windows so thing got kinda old school this weekend, but had a blast leaping into the future with my new setup! Much thanks and I will post 'other questions in another thread, also feel feel to ask me bout them.

Oh and one other thing, so I think its a layer switch thing just like sync, the time in the screen shows the time from the layer I switched from, and when I press cue it flips to the time it should show.

I just read Phil from ddjt review, and he explained the loop and other things I ran into also a lot better so I guess it will be fixed soon.

But again, well done denon. The future looks Prime.

I had a similar hickup but the track audio kept plating so just a screen freeze, before i really panicked it unfroze again luckaly. I was on the other deck searching thru tracks via utp link on the deck that froze.

You could go into preferences and opt out the dual deck option.

Managed to pick up a pair of the SC5K’s last week and like many of you, I have been very very impressed with the units. they’re everything that I’ve wanted Pioneer to incorporate in a CDJ and then some. So hats off to Denon! That being said I have run into a frustrating issue with one of my units. When connecting the unit via digital outs and I playback a track from either layer A or B, the audio is being output from both of the digital outs. Wondering if anyone else has seen this? The RCA outputs work fine. I’m guessing that I have a faulty unit.

You mean both digital outputs are playing the same audio (from both layer A & B mixed)?

PS I have a question of my own. The RCA cables that are supplied with the units can also be used for digital outs? Must admit, I have no experience so far with using digital outs, every Pioneer setup I came across had been hooked up using analog connections.

I see what you mean but , i like having four decks available but not to have to look at them all the time from the moment i loaded a track in it , when i finished playing the track on layer b i want to unload/eject the track for my ease of mind :grimacing:

yes that’s correct and I know its the unit that is doing it as the digital outs on my other SC5K work just fine.

As for using the supplied RCA cables for the digital outs, yes, you can use them for that. However some people would say that’s sacrilege since almost always dedicated digital coax cables will give you better sound quality.

Apologies for this suggestion, in case you’ve already tried this… and no offence meant etc.

The digital RCA outs feed both left and right stereo channels down a single RCA. It’s very easy when connecting up the six RCAs on the back of the the SC5000 to connect up a normal stereo RCA lead, and plug both jacks into the two layers RCA outputs, therefore getting both layers down what could look like a stereo cable when getting to the mixer end.

It might be worth checking.
