How to use Pad Mode?

Hi, where can I find some actual instructions for how to use Pad Mode please? (MC4000)

The official User Guide is brief, (verging on unhelpful or perhaps even mocking?) saying only:

Each time you press the pad mode button, the four pads below are assigned different functions: hot cues, loops, rolls.
