Avatars of several users are gone. It seems not to be the case with older accounts like mine. 
Edit: it’s random. Also happening with old accounts or perhaps only with the ones without avatar (alphabet avatars).
Users who have their avatar images not uploaded to forum but linked from outside source?
Only the ones with the default letters seems to be problematic.
