I’ve had a chat with our service team here in the UK and, although they haven’t seen one needing repair for years, they suspect, from their knowledge of many CD decks, that this -could- be an issue with the mechanism which lowers the disc down into the player after it loads in at the higher level. They have suggested checking for a loose/worn/misaligned belt, which would have assisted the lowering of the disc into the read position within the drive.
