Disappointed by Engine Prime Analysis

It would be a shame if you decide to leave us @kradcliffe !

Hi Kradcliffe,

I hope you are well.

As Paul and myself have discussed with you, we want the forum to be as open as possible.
Any previous issues you may have had with the old Denon team are considered a fresh slate.

We welcome all constructive feedback both positive and negative. We have discussed this with you a few times, Iā€™m sure you do not mean to come across combative however this can seem to be the case.

There have been a few occasions now, where you have made statements, and when challenged announce you will be walking away. The nature of feedback is that it is often a two-way discussion

Our forum platform features democratic moderation. When a commenter receives a certain number of complaints from other members the system will flag their account for a review. We have received a number of flags from other members about the tone of some of your comments lately. This put you into the automatic moderation list for this weekend.

I have turned this off on your account and would encourage you to remain with us.
However please try to consider the tone of any comments particularly to other members.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi Sonny,

On the forum, we support all constructive feedback, positive and negative unfortunately overly offensive comments cannot be permitted. This forum features democratic moderation, and when posts/users hit a certain number of flags their content is removed for review. Specifically, the issue flagged by users, in this case, was off-topic spam posts on a number of threads.

Thank you for your understanding.

Re the ā€˜hot cueā€™ issue - You know that any ā€˜fixesā€™ to a flagged issue or bug, are mostly dealt with at next fw updates Kim. You, nor other members are not getting ignored, thatā€™s one of the main reasons we have a community Forum like this. I canā€™t give you a heads up and/or a precise time that a fix or a new feature ā€˜isā€™ coming because that is not how development works. Our team strive to listen to and act on all issues, feedback and input from customers and deliver as soon as possible, new features and fixes.

But when a update where there is 1 ā€œsmallā€ thing that messes with the way the machinery/ the feature should work, this particular thing should be dealt with immediatly (imo) and the same firmware re-launched. (agreed - thereĀ“s other things that was improved)

And for us who uses the hotcue function as a way of djĀ“ing, multi-tapping and jumping from hotcue to hotcue, theres no ā€œworkaroundā€ that gives the same effect.

My experience so far is that waiting for a full firmware update can take almost a year from Denon (MCX8000 even longer) Like I said before, IĀ“m no hater - If I was, I would not have paid $6500 for the Prime setup after my experience with the MCX8000. But I didā€¦

But I dont want to take the focus away from the analysis problem in the original post - can just wish that some day when the development team are finished with the next FW update, that we also will be able the adjust the beatgrid like on the MCX8000.

Is there a way to import & analyse music files without analysing the BPM?

Just thinking of this as a work around especially if said files have had their BPM written into their id tags by another software.

I also think that introducing a ā€œbugā€ with a new firmware demands the rollout of a fixed firmware asap. Itā€™s not like that was a ton of work to do. Also a statement of Denon regarding some kind of a roadmap and planed features would be really appreciated and would help to cool down some of the conversation online. Whatā€™s even more important than a good product is good costumer relation and information imho.

And two more off topic questions:

I encountered that when playing two tracks on both layers of the same unit in sync mode the tempo seems to fluctuate sometimes. Itā€™s a really weird behavior I canā€™t replicate really.

Also Iā€™d like to know if there is the option to ā€œun-loadā€ a track from a deck to get rid of the second waveform in the display.

Thanks for any tips

The discussion feels a bit heated here

I think what many people would like is quick, small bug fix releases. Just to patch up problems and as an addition to the major feature releases.

So i did a quick statistical analyses comparing the Engine Prime bpm and beatgrid detection vs RBDJ, SDJ Pro & Traktor Pro. I donā€™t have Virtual DJ 8.

Sample size 20 Tracks all sorts and i kept it at ā€œmainstreamā€ genres.

BPM Range 60 to 160

Bias: One or Two old tracks probably made with live drummers, i initially planned on just using modern tracks but i thought what the heck.

Results here

BPM GRID.xlsx (9.5 KB)

My spreadsheet skills are not that great, so all the bars are blue :stuck_out_tongue:

G = Grid B = BPM

I accepted half time bpms as a correct bpm reading

60 to 160 leaves room for interpretation of what is correct and incorrect analysis. Is that track 62.5 or 125? Are you marking it wrong if it comes up as one in one software and the other in another software? I would suggest for testing purposes you need to use a range more like 70 - 140 or something like that.

** Edit: Very interesting chart by the way.

Half time bpm was accepted as a correct bpm value in the process but not in the case of RBDJ. Reason was that despite helping the software by selecting a narrow tempo range it still insisted on the double time value. The way to correct it was to dive into the beatgrid settings and half the BPM manually.

So i valued that single extra step as a failure as i wanted the comparison to be simple and straight.

If i wanted to go deeper, i can start sliding grids left and right, almost all the software will score 100% minus Engine Prime.

The most surprising thing is how Traktor handled live drummer songs, it averaged the bpm, you can see the beatgrid slipping at some point but it caught up later!

Another surprise - Traktor was also the only software that got the lower value BPM right! I would have thought since its more focused at House, Electro genres that it will also fail at that. I did not have to help the software at all!

Engine Prime detected I Love College ā€“ Asher Roth 86bpm as 80bpm, how does one fix that in its current iteration except one types in the bpm directly!

It was the only software that got a bpm completely wrong i.e not double or half time.

Like i have previously mentioned, Engine prime already has a very strong foundation and needs a few more tweaks to smash the competition and win over more users.

We all want it to do well or at least be a robust alternative.

Overall it came second place in my quick analysis in terms of bpm and grid detection, bottom two were RBDJ and Serato DJ but these two have efficient way of making tight bpm adjustment and flexible beat grid.

Traktor is very good at this detection. Thatā€™s the reason I still like to use it at home for recording mixes.

Youā€™re leaving for good?

Again?

How many times is that now?

You come and go more times than a 12 year old boy with a porno mag.

@S_Anderson - honestly I think you should stop being so hostile against other forum members. He (Kradcliffe) is a frustratet buyer or should I say investor in a product that comes with flaws and long fw releases. Its fine by me that you think its the greatest - but you dont need to get that low on a personal level. Despite all my problems with Denon I have yet not been personal. And even if I disagree with other members i dont get that low.

Everything is equal here

Kradcliffe has expressed his opinion - I have expressed my opinion.

In the couple of years that Iā€™ve been in the forum I think this is the third or forth time he has gone for the bye bye, Iā€™m leaving and Iā€™m never ever coming back - and then comes back - like an long film promising the final credits but only really popping out for a few commercials.

And almost every single comment I see where you disagree with anyone, you get way personal. Well, guess that every schoolyard has its bully.

And now youā€™re being the same toward me.

Your posts have been described by others as inaccurate and unfair Incredibly recently. Clearly we both are alike and both have different stains on what should be squarely clean shiny halos.

I want to say one thing specially here and now, if you continue to have a go at me then I, I will, I will have, I will leave for ever and ever and Iā€™ll Iā€™ll Iā€™ll never ever evercome back

Well not until next week

Inacurate and unfair has only been said by a Denon memberā€¦ but never mind - they are getting a hard time from me - even I know that - because I want value for my money. Iā€™m not getting down on that childish level with you and wont talk that way to other forum members. So have a great evening.
